New Testament form of Jacó. From লাতিন Sanctus (“holy, saint”) + Iacobus (“James”), from প্রাচীন গ্রিক Ἰακώβ (Iakṓb), from হিব্রু יַעֲקֹב‎ (Yaʿăqōḇ). The regular outcome of লাতিন word-initial /iV-/ in পর্তুগিজ is /d͡ʒV-/; Iacobus must have been borrowed during the Middle Ages. Later, it was contracted to Santiago when referring to the saint, and ultimately suffered juncture reinterpretation (“São Tiago”) in analogy to São Mateus, São Marcos, etc.
