From লাতিন Ulpiāna, from Ulpius, the nomen gentilicium of Trajan + -ānus. Selami Pulaha states that the shift from Ulpiana to Lipjan is in accordance with early আলবেনীয় phonetic rules, and must therefore have been inhabited by আলবেনীয়s to reach its current form. It has also been connected with the আলবেনীয় term ujk ("wolf") (Old and Dialectal আলবেনীয়: "ulk") and the name of the city of Ulqin probably delivers from the same variation.
