Of disputed origin. Biswas suggests it to be a compound of its dialectal variant সেজার or synonym ছেদার, attributed as tatsamas despite a lack of basis, and সংস্কৃত रूप (রূপ)। Chatterji, Das, and Sen suggest it to be a compound of সেঁজা (“porcupine”) + -রু (“similarity, intensity”); the former being from Late প্রাকৃত 𑀲𑁂𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀅 (সে়জ্জঅ), from মাগধী প্রাকৃত 𑀲𑀬𑁆𑀬𑀓 (সয়্য়ক) or 𑀲𑁂𑀬𑁆𑀬𑀓 (সেয়্য়ক), from অশোক প্রাকৃত 𑀲𑀬𑀓𑁂 (সয়কে) or 𑀲𑁂𑀬𑀓𑁂 (সেয়কে), from সংস্কৃত शल्यक (শল্যক), and the latter being from সংস্কৃত रूप (রূপ)।[১][২][৩] Compare গোরু, বাছুর, শশারু, ঘোড়ারু, গাভুর। Tagore suggests it to be a compound with a suffix -আরু, not providing a potential source for the other component; compare লাফারু and দাবাড়ু।
