[সম্পাদনা]ব্যুৎপত্তি
[সম্পাদনা]The name is compounded from two elements, the second of which is হাট (“market”), since the city was named after a market. The first element is disputed; there are many possibilities about the origin of the name:[১]
- a corruption of বাঘেরহাট (bagherhaṭ), a compound of বাঘ (“tiger”)-এর (“of”)হাট (“market”), since the Sundarbans are located near it, where many tigers used to live in the past.
- a corruption of বাকেরহাট (bakerhaṭ), a compound of বাকের + হাট, with the first element from আরবি بَاقِر (bāqir, “opener”), referring to a former Muslim ruler of the region, possibly Bakir Khan or Mirza Agha Baqer, after whom the nearby বাকেরগঞ্জ town was named.
- a compound of বাগ (“garden”)-এরহাট, named after a garden near the market which was built by Khan Jahan Ali, a former ruler of the region.
- a corruption of বাঁকেরহাট (bãkerhaṭ), a compound of বাঁক (“bend”) + -এর + হাট, since the market was established near the bend of a river.
