[সম্পাদনা]Unknown. Some derive it from সংস্কৃত वकद्वीप (ৱকদ্ৱীপ, literally “crane-island”), a compound of वक (ৱক) + द्वीप (দ্ৱীপ), but Chatterji claims this to be phonologically inadmissible. Chatterji inconclusively suggests the potential derivation of সংস্কৃত व्याघ्रतटी (ৱ্যাঘ্রতটী, literally “tiger-coast”), a compound of व्याघ्र (ৱ্যাঘ্র) + तटी (তটী); such a word would have gone through the hypothetical medial phases of Prakrit *𑀯𑀕𑁆𑀖𑀅𑀟𑀻 (*ৱগ্ঘঅডী), লুয়া ত্রুটি মডিউল:parameters এর 290 নং লাইনে: Parameter 2 should be a valid language or etymology language code; the value "inc-mgd" is not valid. See WT:LOL and WT:LOL/E.।, and Old Bengali *বাঘডী, ultimately deaspirating in Middle Bengali *বাগডী (*bāgaḍi)।[১]
