[সম্পাদনা]According to some, the word is a corruption of সংস্কৃত তণ্ডুল (taṇḍula) via তাঁড়ুল > তাঁউল > চাঁউল; further contracted forms, according to this hypothesis, include চাল।[১] Another explanation is that it is corruption of চালনী (“sieve”); এর উৎস সংস্কৃত चालनी (চাল৽নী) (< चल् (চ৽ল্, “move”)).[২]
