From Proto-Indo-Aryan *śrútiṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćrútiš, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlú-ti-s, from *ḱlew- (“to hear”). Cognate with Old English hlūd (whence ইংরেজি loud), লিথুয়ানীয় klausa, Proto-Slavic *sluxъ (whence পোলিশ słuch, রাশিয়ান слух (slux), Old Church Slavonic слоухъ (sluxŭ) (Glagolitic spelling ), বুলগেরীয় слух (sluh)). Equivalent to श्रु (শ্রু) +‎ -ति (-তি).
