Early Assamese স্বপন (sbopono) থেকে প্রাপ্ত, কৃতঋণ সংস্কৃত স্ৱপ্ন (svápna); এর উৎস Proto-Indo-European *swépnos, *supnós (“dream”), দুটোরই উৎস: Proto-Indo-European *swep-। সমোৎসজাত Kamta সপোন (xopün) / ṣopön, লাতিন somnus, Ancient Greek ὕπνος (húpnos) এবং Old English swefn (ইংরেজিsweven).
